Sofitel Legend Old Cataract

Sofitel Legend Old Cataract

Aswan

sofitellegendoldcataract

The visitor book at the Old Cataract Hotel is one of the more impressive in Egypt, listing a veritable roll call of the 20th century’s great and good, among them Tsar Nicholas II, Winston Churchill, Henry Kissinger and — most famously — Agatha Christie. Parts of her novel Death on the Nile were set at the luxury hotel, which has now had a complete renovation. Christie would struggle to recognise the hotel today (the pools and spa might surprise her), but the atmosphere is still one of timeless elegance, with discrete service and an obliging front desk.

Siwa Oasis

adrereamellalsiwa

This unusual property is ten miles from the oasis town of Siwa, and seems to be a part of the desert from which it rises. Walls are made from sandy rock and roofs from thick wooden beams and palm fronds. The decor here is simple, throwing the focus on its natural, hand-built architecture and on furniture built by local artisans. It’s at its most atmospheric and romantic at night, when the whole place is lit by lanterns and candlelight. The lovely staff will help you to organise trips out into the desert.

Best time to vist Egypt

The best time to visit Egypt depends on the type of experience you are looking for. For warm weather and beach activities, the best time to visit is between October and April. The temperature is mild and comfortable, and the Red Sea coast offers ideal conditions for swimming, snorkeling and diving.

For those interested in visiting historical sites, the best time to visit is between October and April too, as the temperatures are not too which makes sightseeing more enjoyable.

If you are interested in seeing the Nile and its surroundings, the best time to visit would be between September and May, when the water level usually is high.

For those who want to avoid the crowds, it's best to visit during the summer months (May-September) as the temperature is quite hot and it's considered as low season.

It's important to keep in mind that during Ramadan and Islamic holidays, some places may have limited hours or be closed entirely, so plan accordingly.
